Degrowth Fireside Chat: How do we reach a One Planet Economy?

Is it enough to be sceptical of the growth imperative, or do we need to radically leave it behind? How could a One Planet Economy look that thrives within planetary boundaries – and what would this concretely mean for our social security systems, tax revenues, and the use of public funds?

We want to address these questions in our new event series ‘Degrowth Fireside Chat’.

On 16 June 2025, the first event will take place at WWF Zurich with the French economist Timothée Parrique. He conducts research at the University of Lausanne in the field of macroecological planning. In his dissertation, he examined the economic implications of degrowth. Additionally, he is the author of the book “Wachstum bremsen oder untergehen” (Slow Down Growth or Perish), originally published in French and now translated into eight languages. He regularly writes about the impossibility of green growth and is the lead author of the report “Decoupling debunked” (2019).

At this event, Timothée Parrique will present his theses on the economy and, together with Thomas Vellacott, CEO of WWF Switzerland, and Laurène Descamps (Co-Lead One Planet Lab), will conduct a "Fireside Chat." The evening will focus on the opportunities and challenges of a "One-Planet Economy" and the role of degrowth in this context. Am 16. Juni 2025 findet im WWF Zürich die erste Veranstaltung mit dem französischen Ökonomen Timothée Parrique statt. Er forscht an der Universität Lausanne im Bereich der makroökologischen Planung. In seiner Dissertation untersuchte er die wirtschaftlichen Implikationen von Degrowth. Ausserdem ist er Autor des im Original auf Französisch erschienenen Buches "Wachstum bremsen oder untergehen", das mittlerweile in acht Sprachen übersetzt worden ist. Er schreibt regelmässig über die Unmöglichkeit von grünem Wachstum und ist Hauptautor des Berichts "Decoupling debunked" (2019).

Bei diesem Event wird Timothée Parrique seine Thesen zur Wirtschaft präsentieren und gemeinsam mit Thomas Vellacott, CEO WWF Schweiz, und Laurène Descamps (Co-Lead One Planet Lab) ein "Fireside Chat" führen.
